Big Rig Accident Statistics

Large tractor-trailers and semis that we frequently share the road with are known as “big rigs” by the general public. You can use both terms to refer to trucks used for business purposes.

Tractor-trailer collisions result in shockingly high numbers of fatalities when compared to other types of car accidents. The size of semi-trucks and other big rigs is primarily to blame. More space is required for a semitrailer to pull a heavy load to a stop.

One person is killed in a truck-related accident in the US every 15 minutes. In America, transportation-related accidents claim the lives of nearly 500,000 people annually, including 5,000 truck drivers.

Truck accidents cause roughly 113 fatalities and close to 3,000 injuries each year in California. Between 200 and 300 people in the Golden State are killed annually in truck accidents.

Between 2009 and 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, there were a record number of fatalities attributed to semi-truck accidents. In 2015, a tractor-trailer collision caused one in ten deaths on American roads.

When pursuing a large truck moving less than 40 mph, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration advises leaving 4 seconds between vehicles. A second must be added when driving at a speed greater than forty miles per hour.
