MADOFF: The Monster of Wall Street will follow a series of re-enactments, as well as interviews, are given, in relation to American financier Bernie Madoff. Madoff was responsible for defrauding thousands of investors of billions of dollars in the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, worth about $64.8 billion. For those who are unfamiliar, Ponzi schemes lead victims to believe that profits are coming from legitimate business activity when in reality, other investors are the source of all funds. Essentially, someone would offer high returns on investments, with little or no risk, to their victim(s). The con artist then tries to recruit new investors in order to pay off the high returns to older investors, pocketing some of the money along the way. Ponzi schemes can be sustained for extended periods of time as long as investors do not demand to be paid.
Madoff founded Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, LLC, in 1960, and it is believed he began defrauding investors as early as the 1970s, though he claimed he did so starting in the 1990s. The docuseries will dive more in-depth into the scheme and how something of this scale could not have been accomplished alone. Both of Madoff’s sons, his daughter, and his brother were and are implicated in the crime. In the trailer for the series, one of the narrators says, “In a blue-collar crime, the bodies drop before you investigate. In a white collar crime, they drop afterward.” Several employees or collaborators of Madoff committed suicide during the time of the investigation, so we imagine this will be discussed in-depth in the documentary, as well. One of those who died by suicide was Madoff’s own son, Mark. It appears the docuseries will explore the darker side of this crime, and it’s sure to be an interesting take on the subject matter.

We don’t know much about the cast of MADOFF: The Monster of Wall Street at this point. However, the trailer appears to share that the docuseries will consist of both live interviews and re-enactments. Given the subject matter, there is the possibility of some high-profile investors and financiers making appearances to discuss their experiences. The IMDb article for the series lists two cast members – Melony Feliciano and Marla Freeman – but it is unclear what roles they play.

However, we also know that Netflix is quick to change its mind about renewals and cancels of series, so you never know what’s in store for the future of MADOFF: The Monster of Wall Street.

The official trailer for MADOFF: The Monster of Wall Street has us on the edge of our seats! Most scenes look like re-enactments, but there appear to be some interviews done, as well. As mentioned before, Academy Award-winner Joe Berlinger, recently known for directing some of Netflix’s other true crime docuseries, is part of the brains behind this series, as well, and you can see his style of documentary filmmaking in the trailer itself, which only makes it more exciting. The trailer gives us a glimpse into what we’re about to experience with the help of several tools across the duration of it. There are also many quotable moments in this documentary, and we can get a whiff of those from this trailer itself. The trailer has yet to get more attention from the viewers, but it is nearing the one million mark!

In the trailer, one of the commentators says that Madoff “could live with himself as a liar much more easily than he could live with himself as a failure.” As we said, several quotable moments, but this one really stood out as it sums up what the entire documentary will possibly revolve around.
